Hand-carved from single block of hinoki cypress wood.

A Daitengu " long nose"mask.

It was used in Kagura Shinto dance ritual shrines.

Original urushi lacquer in red and black.

Original patina with natural age wear.Unrestored

The fierce expression,detailed brow ridges and deep-set eyes are carved entirely by hand. the long nose identifies it as Daitengu.the highest rank of Tengu spirits in folklore. Traces of incense smoke darkening inside decades of ceremonial use.
